PROGRAM DETAILS:

Keynote speaker Hisham Khalek is an Arabic professor at the University of Minnesota. Of Lebanese heritage, Khalek will speak about the diversity of Lebanon, from its history, to its geography and its people, and how Lebanon was, and continues to be, a strategic center where a multitude of cultural groups interact together to navigate a delicate balance between East and West.

The Lebanese Cedar Group will perform several traditional Debke dances, the national folk dance of Lebanon. Debke is a line dance that has been practiced in the Levant (Lebanon, Syria and Jordan) for hundreds of years and is often performed at weddings and other joyous occasions. The Lebanese Cedar Group has been dancing together for five years, and is composed entirely of Lebanese and Lebanese-American youth aged 15 to 22.

Lebanese music by Mozayik, a local band led by John Khoury, performing a variety of Arabic language tunes from traditional to modern, pop and classical.

Middle Eastern dances by Margo Abdo O’Dell: a Lebanese-American who discovered her heritage through her passion for dance. Based in Minneapolis, Margo is a master teacher, star performer and creative artist who uses her energy and talent to share the beauty of Arabic dance.
